From Spain to the Laboratory
Born in Spain, Rosendo Mateu’s illustrious journey in the fragrance industry began at the young age of 15. He joined the Puig perfumery company in Barcelona as an apprentice. As he rotated through various departments, he ended up directly in the perfumery division.
Mateu sought to expand his expertise by studying raw materials and ingredients in Grasse, France, under the guidance of Marcel Carles at the Roure School (now Givaudan). His education continued in Geneva with Grandmaster Arturo Jordi Pey at Firmenich, and in Paris with Max Gavary at IFF For over 40 years, he honed his craft at Puig, developing fragrances for international houses like Carolina Herrera, Paco Rabanne, and Zara. In 2010, in recognition of his immense dedication and technical brilliance, he was officially named a Master Perfumer.
Style and Philosophy
Mateu’s artistic style is defined by his understanding of raw materials, which allows him to create high-quality, balanced compositions. His creativity even extends beyond perfumery; he has notably developed the flavour composition of a gin for the international market and crafted the scent of candy for the vibrant Epiphany Parade in Barcelona.
After decades of working with other brands, Mateu sought ultimate creative freedom. In 2014, he began collaborating with his son, Joan, to launch his eponymous fragrance collection, Rosendo Mateu Olfactive Expressions. Debuting in Spain in 2015 and expanding into a renowned lineup of exquisite unisex fragrances by 2017.
