Her Journey to the Laboratory
Born and raised in Romania, Gabriela’s early life was punctuated by the ebb and flow of the seasons. Her grandmother’s garden, filled with peonies, linden, and the aroma of green tomato leaves, served as her very first introduction to the world of scent. Initially studying pharmacy in Romania with the intention of becoming a pharmacist, her plans changed during her final year at school.
After working in a research lab for aroma chemicals and taking a trip to Grasse, she took peek through the window of perfumery, knowing it would be her life’s work. In 2000, Gabriela relocated to the United States as a perfumer’s lab assistant, determined to learn the craft from the ground up. She was rewarded for her dedication and growing expertise, and in 2015, she officially joined Firmenich, working alongside her one-time mentor, Honorine Blanc.

Chelariu’s artistic style is characterised by a connection to nature and a reliance on her earliest memories, which she describes as vibrant and fresh. Whether inspired by the musky chill of winter, the humid earth of spring, or the blooming linden flowers of June, her upbringing continuously inspires her.
