Today, our spotlight falls on Alberto Morillas, a self-taught master perfumer. Known for his deep connection to his Andalusian roots and his prolificacy, Morillas has created some of the most beloved fragrances of our time. Let us take a look at his journey from the sun-drenched streets of Seville to his role as Master Perfumer at dsm-firmenich.
The Path of a Self-Taught Man

Alberto Morillas’s journey began in Seville, Spain, where he was born in 1950. His youth in the warmth of Andalusia was bathed in the scents of orange blossom, jasmine, rosemary, and the traditional apothecary colognes bought by the litre. After his family relocated to Switzerland when he was eleven, his fascination with scent only grew as he continued to explore perfume counters, a rare hobby for a boy his age.
While studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Geneva, reading a Vogue portrait of French perfumer Jean-Paul Guerlain radically changed his course. Although he lacked a formal background in chemistry, the 20-year-old Morillas convinced the Swiss fragrance firm Firmenich to hire him in their scientific research department in 1970. Working alongside chemists, he expanded his knowledge of natural essences and secretly began composing his own perfumes. Defying company rules, he presented his first juice to management. Surprised and impressed by the young man creating perfumes without formal training, Firmenich sent him to New York to officially train. He earned the title of Perfumer in 1977 and was named Master Perfumer in 1998.
Style and Philosophy
Morillas’s artistic style reflects his Mediterranean heritage. He has an affinity for fresh citruses, marine notes, and vibrant florals like jasmine, tuberose, neroli, and orange blossom, alongside a signature use of musk notes. For Morillas, creating a fragrance is a highly personal artistic exercise. He relies on a meticulously built mental scent and frequently works on over twenty compositions simultaneously.
Believing that perfumery is the mirror of society, he views himself as the artist who interprets human emotions through scent. Over his career, he has touched nearly 7,000 perfumes, creating era-defining hits like Calvin Klein CK One and Giorgio Armani Acqua di Giò. In addition to his work at dsm-firmenich, he founded his own independent house, Mizensir, and launched a custom perfumery service with Penhaligon’s in London. His immense contributions to the art of perfumery were formally recognised in 2003 when he was awarded the Prix François Coty.
Notable Creations
Alberto Morillas is the masterful nose behind an array of modern classics. Here are a few of his standout creations:
1. Armand Basi In Red EDP

A vibrant and passionate floral-spicy fragrance that is reminiscent of Mediterranean warmth. Morillas blended top notes of ginger, mandarin, and bergamot with a heart of rose and jasmine, all resting on a rich woody base. 2. BLV Pour Homme Eau de Toilette

A fragrance of captivating contrasts, this scent highlights Morillas’s signature use of musks and fresh spices. Using ginger again, but this time with cardamom and the warmth of tobacco blossom, sandalwood, and musk. The result is a versatile fragrance that is clean yet sensual.
3. Calvin Klein Everyone

A modern, eco-conscious evolution of his aquatic work. For this clean composition, Morillas utilised organic orange essential oil paired with a heart of blue tea accord and a cedarwood base. It is a green summer fragrance that interprets the spirit of a new generation.
