Just to be clear, this isn’t a “fragrances that smell like rain” article; this is what fragrances I personally gravitate towards when it’s raining.
I usually say I don’t like fragrances with rose, but what I mean by that is I don’t like fragrances that smell like rose water. Otherwise, I tend to enjoy rose fragrances, especially when it’s raining. Blended with warmer, more intimate notes like musk and oud, roses tend to take on a new life. I also tend to enjoy patchouli and vanilla blends on rainy days. These combinations tend to lend me a sense of calm and comfort. They are also note-combinations that happen to perform really well in slightly cooler, rainy weather.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at some of these fragrances that match the descriptions stated above.
1. Mancera Roses Vanille EDP

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Mancera |
| Best for | Women |
| Fragrance Family | Amber Vanilla |
| Notes | Top: Italian Lemon Middle: Turkish Rose Base: Vanilla, White Musk, and Cedar |
| Release year | 2011 |
| Perfumer | Pierre Montale |
This would describe my perfect rain-day scent if it only had patchouli, too. Other than that, this scent is amazing. I don’t like the lemon at the opening, especially for what I’m intending to use this for, but it fades quite quickly, leaving you with a gorgeous, sweet rose fragrance that dries down to a musky, slightly woody scent.
2. Narciso Rodriguez Her Intense EDP

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Narciso Rodriquez |
| Best for | Women |
| Fragrance Family | Chypre Fruity |
| Notes | Top: Peach and Bergamot Middle: Musk and White Flowers Base: Vanilla and Vetiver |
| Release year | 2025 |
| Perfumer | Sonia Constant |
Vanilla, peach, and musk are the stars of this Narciso Rodriguez flanker. It also translates as woody on the skin. This is an intense flanker, so don’t expect the basic NR DNA as it is amplified and sweetened in this fragrance. While I like the basic musks this brand creates for everyday wear, like for the office, but when it’s raining, and I need something more projecting, I’d reach for this.
3. Maison Margiela Replica When The Rain Stops EDT

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Maison Margiela |
| Best for | Women |
| Fragrance Family | Chypre Fruity |
| Notes | Top: Green Notes, Bergamot, and Pink Pepper Middle: Watery Notes, Rain Notes, Turkish Rose, and Jasmine Base: Pine Tree, Moss, and Patchouli |
| Release year | 2021 |
| Perfumer | Fanny Bal |
When the Rain Stops is a Replica fragrance by Maison Margiela. The watery notes with the Turkish rose note remind me of my mother’s roses in our garden and how they would smell on dewy mornings. We also happened to have a jasmine tree, so this fragrance brings the full picture. The pine tree, moss, and patchouli in the base and the green notes in the opening evoke an image of wet grass. This fragrance doesn’t just feel comforting to wear on rainy days; it feels like a memory to me.
4. D&G Devotion Intense EDP

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Dolce & Gabbana |
| Best for | Women |
| Fragrance Family | Amber Vanilla |
| Notes | Top: Hazelnut Middle: Orange Blossom Base: Vanilla |
| Release year | 2024 |
| Perfumer | Olivier Cresp |
One of the most vanilla-forward fragrances I’ve tried, Devotion Intense is an absolutely lovely fragrance for rainy days. The vanilla is mostly notable at the dry down and is the note that lingers the most. This fragrance is so simple and comforting that I couldn’t help but fall in love with it. Oh, and yes, it is a gourmand vanilla. The orange blossom and hazelnut help push that deliciousness forward.
5. Montale Patchouli Leaves EDP

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Montale |
| Best for | Unisex |
| Fragrance Family | Amber Woody |
| Notes | Top: Patchouli Middle: Amber and Labdanum Base: Patchouli, Musk and Vanilla |
| Release year | 2006 |
| Perfumer | Pierre Montale |
Patchouli Leaves by Montale smells like straight-up patchouli. It is a long-lasting, earthy fragrance with a beautiful dry down. The patchouli here isn’t plain either; it’s the chocolatey style with a hint of spiciness. This doesn’t refer to a chocolate accord in the composition, but rather describes the aroma of the fragrance.
6. Diptyque Eau Duelle EDP

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Diptyque |
| Best for | Unisex |
| Fragrance Family | Aromatic Spicy |
| Notes | Top: Pink Pepper and Incense Middle: Bourbon Vanilla Base: Cypriol |
| Release year | 2013 |
| Perfumer | Fabrice Pellegrin |
Eau Duelle by Diptyque is a non-gourmand vanilla. The vanilla is prominent but dry, blending beautifully with the pink pepper and cypriol notes, creating a smoky, peppery scent. It shines in rainy weather, but I generally recommend it for the winter and fall seasons.
