From the refined ingredients to the superior packaging, fragrances from private collections feel like they’re from a different universe compared to the fragrances these brands put out in their mainstream collections. They are marketed with an air of mystery and exclusivity to justify their higher price tag. The vanilla isn’t a regular vanilla; it’s one that is rarely found in the wild and was sought out just for this perfume. The sandalwood isn’t any sandalwood; the perfumer travelled across continents and went on dangerous journeys to cultivate its scent.
While this marketing is designed to elevate the value of these products, it sometimes translates well into the products themselves; sometimes it doesn’t. Then we end up with a fragrance that performs on a very basic average and is not quite unique, leaving us wondering why this is even in this collection, and is it really worth its price tag?
But when it works, magic happens. When you find that perfect scent packaged so beautifully that it somehow feels crafted just for you, you feel like you’re on top of the world.
Here are some fragrances that I like from private collections. Let’s take a closer look at them and see if they really belong there.
1. Armani Prive Vert Malachite EDP

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Armani |
| Best for | Unisex |
| Fragrance Family | Woody Aromatic |
| Key Accords | White Floral Vanilla Yellow Floral Citrus Sweet Soft Spicy Amber |
| Release year | 2016 |
| Perfumer | Fabrice Pellegrin |
Vert Malachite is a Taurus’s dream perfume. The bottle alone is a masterpiece. A smooth malachite green dream. As for the scent, it is equally beautiful. The fragrance family says woody aromatic, but it’s more of a woody floral scent to me. I imagine someone who enjoys spending their alone time in their cabin in the woods wearing this. It is refined but has a hint of wilderness to it. I would say this fragrance is very similar in concept to glamping.
2. Dior Tobacolor EDP

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Dior |
| Best for | Unisex |
| Fragrance Family | Amber Gourmand |
| Key Accords | Sweet Tobacco Honey Amber Fruity Smoky Warm Spicy White Floral Animalic |
| Release year | 2021 |
| Perfumer | François Demachy |
One of the most gorgeous tobacco fragrances I’ve tried, Tobacolor by Dior is a sweet, honeyed, gourmand take on tobacco fragrances. It is very well blended, and the notes are cohesive, so it doesn’t have any harsh edges or unpleasant aromas. It is similar to Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford, which is a fragrance I love, except that Tobacolor is better and much smoother.
3. Chanel Comète Les Exclusifs EDP

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Chanel |
| Best for | Unisex |
| Fragrance Family | Floral |
| Key Accords | Powdery Floral Iris Musky Fresh Aldehydic Vanilla Violet Almond Earthy |
| Release year | 2024 |
| Perfumer | Olivier Polge |
The marketing behind Comete by Chanel is a very good example of what I mentioned earlier in the introduction. Olivier Polge states: “At the beginning of each creation, an element of inspiration is necessary and, in COMÈTE, the starting point was the idea of stardust.” Is he trying to say that this perfume smells like stardust? Because it doesn’t. It’s a beautiful scent, don’t get me wrong. It’s clean and inoffensive, slightly sweet and good for everyday wear. But I’m not sure it’s “prive” worthy.
4. Chloé Atelier des Fleurs Cedrus EDP

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Chloé |
| Best for | Unisex |
| Fragrance Family | Woody Spicy |
| Key Accords | Woody Earthy Aromatic Warm Spicy Mossy |
| Release year | 2019 |
| Perfumer | Quentin Bisch |
On the other hand, we have Cedrus by Chloe, which is also a clean, elegant scent. But this fragrance from the Atelier des Fleurs collection stands out more. While it is a clean scent in essence, it still has a woody andspicy aroma that makes it more interesting. If your style is casual chic, leaning slightly more formal, this has to be your signature scent.
5. Gucci Tears Of Iris EDP

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Gucci |
| Best for | Unisex |
| Fragrance Family | Floral Woody Musk |
| Key Accords | Powdery Iris Musky Woody Violet Earthy Amber |
| Release year | 2019 |
| Perfumer | Alberto Morillas |
Tears of Iris by Gucci is up there as one of the bestbridal perfumes, if the bride likes iris, that is. To some, this fragrance feels nostalgic, as it smells similar to something their mothers would wear. I personally don’t love iris, but I don’t hate it either. I have owned fragrances with an iris note that I loved, but I wouldn’t spend “prive” money on an iris perfume. So I’ll just leave it at that.
