Sweet & Tart: Pomegranates in Perfumes

Pomegranates are some of the most aesthetically pleasing fruits and are rich in symbolism. It was first domesticated by ancient Iranians in the Persian Plateau and nearby regions about 5,000 years ago. Today, they are a staple in numerous cuisines across the region. As for their symbolic meaning, Pomegranates appear in many forms of religious texts and mythological stories as symbols of fertility, prosperity, beauty, resurrection and eternal life. It is regarded as a blessed fruit to many and is visible in many forms of art and literature.

In perfumes, a pomegranate note adds a juicy, vibrant touch to the scent. Its scent can range from sweet to tart, sour, fresh, and fruity. The final effects it produces depend on what other notes are present alongside it, and for the most part, this note serves as a background character, supporting the other notes. This spring perfume smells like a juicy fruit tart at the opening and dries down to a gorgeous bouquet of wisteria and jasmine.

3. CH 212 VIP Wins Limited Edition EDP

212 VIP Wins is a fresh, green summer scent right off the bat. It is slightly sweet but mostly musky and green. I believe that bit of sweetness is a contribution of the pomegranate at the heart and the tonka bean at the base. This makes a lovely everyday office fragrance, especially if you live in a warm region like the Gulf.

4. Versace Bright Crystal Absolu EDP

In all honesty, I’d rather pick up Crystal Noir over a Bright Crystal by Versace. Not because it’s bad, but I just don’t tend to gravitate towards fresher, brighter scents, and this has bright right there in the name. The Absolu version is double the brightness, and double the projection and longevity.

5. Chopard Miel D’Arabie EDP

The last fragrance and only unisex option on this list is Chopard Miel D’Arabie. This is a spicy honey perfume with a hint of fruitiness from the pomegranate that is detected at the back. I can’t detect the tea note, though. Yet again, can you smell tea if it’s a pomegranate tea?
