Packing is the most stressful step in preparing for traveling. You must decide which outfits to pack, how many shoes you need, and whether you have your essential beauty products packed. Then you sit there wondering what fragrances you should take with you.
Will you pack your signature scent or pick one that matches the theme of your travel destination? I usually pack the fragrances for my trip last, taking my signature scent and a couple of others depending on my fragrance needs or what might come up. What if I get invited to a night out or for a fancy dinner, per se? I need to be prepared for that.
Then, the question of what is the best way to pack my fragrances. Dry air, sunlight, and the occasional luggage mishap can spell trouble for your perfume bottles. Plus, many brands don’t offer travel-friendly refills.
Thankfully, there are solutions! Here are some of the best perfume travel tips to keep your scent safe and intact so you can enjoy your trips without a second thought. Share these tips with your friends—they’ll thank you later!
Before choosing your preferred method of packing your fragrances, keep in mind that you can bring 3.4 fluid ounces (100 ml) of perfume in a carry-on bag or 18 fluid ounces (530 ml) in a checked bag. If you’re reusing a refillable bottle, clean it with water and unscented soap to remove old fragrances before refilling it.
1. Invest in Perfume Atomizers

An atomizer is one of the most convenient ways to travel with perfume. It also happens to be my second favorite way! These compact, leak-proof containers easily fit into your purse or carry-on. Atomizers are designed to prevent spills and avoid the risk of glass breaking.
They come in handy not just for traveling but for carrying your fragrance with you throughout the day as you run errands or walk around town as well. All you have to do is fill the atomizer with your favorite fragrance, and you’re ready for your next trip.
2. Use Protective Perfume Pouches
A perfume pouch is another essential for travel. Just as you pack makeup and first-aid kits, a pouch for your fragrance can help prevent accidental leaks and keep your clothes safe from stains*. Travel pouches like the Missha Rose Gold Multi Pouch are spacious enough for most perfume bottles and add extra protection to your suitcase or carry-on.

3. Choose Plastic Spray Bottles

The best thing about these bottles is that they don’t leak and hence there’s no need to worry about spillage or leakage. These bottles are available at all cosmetic shops and online websites too. You can choose from different sizes as well as colors according to your preference. You can even fill them up with your favorite perfume and take them along with you wherever you go!
4. Opt for Miniature Perfume Bottles
Remember how I mentioned using atomizers was my second favorite travel perfume hack? Purchasing my favorite fragrances in miniature size is the first. Many popular fragrance brands, from Gucci to Dolce & Gabbana, offer travel-sized versions of their scents.
These mini fragrance bottles are designed for easy transport and don’t require refills. They’re an easy and fuss-free solution. If you can find the fragrance you want to take on your trip in a miniature size, don’t hesitate to buy it.
5. Pack Your Perfume in a Box
Store your perfume in a small box lined with tissue paper for extra safety, which adds an extra cushioning layer. It’s a simple and effective way to safeguard your scent.
How to Refill a Travel Perfume Bottle: Step-by-Step
Method 1: Refilling a Perfume Atomizer
- Gather your atomizer and the perfume you wish to transfer.
- Remove the cap and sprayer from your main perfume bottle.
- Find the small plastic valve at the bottom of the atomizer.
- Align the atomizer with the nozzle of your main bottle.
- Press down and pump to transfer the liquid into the atomizer. This process may take a minute or two.
- Once filled, cap your perfume, and your travel atomizer is ready!
Method 2: Transferring Perfume to a Plastic Spray Bottle
- Prepare your perfume and the plastic spray bottle.
- Remove the caps from both bottles.
- Take off the sprayer from the plastic bottle to reveal the opening.
- Spray the perfume into the plastic bottle until it’s nearly full (leave some space to avoid spills).
- Replace the sprayer and secure the cap.
- To transfer between two travel bottles, simply remove both caps and pour the perfume from one to the other, using a funnel for accuracy if needed. Handle with care to avoid spills.
