Tom Ford Black Orchid Parfum is a unisex fragrance that launched in 2020 as a more intense version of the original Black Orchid. Tom Ford sought “the perfect flower” when creating Black Orchid, aiming for a luxurious, elegant, pure, and refined scent. The Parfum is designed to be a potent and seductive fragrance.
The fragrance features notes of truffle, ylang-ylang, black orchid, bergamot, vanilla, chocolate, tonka, and patchouli. This rich and complex composition is intended to produce a luxurious scent, one that is avant-garde and elegant. This aligns perfectly with the chosen face of the fragrance.
The face of the campaign is Tilda Swinton, who is bold and avant-garde. She has an androgynous look, and her style is reminiscent of strong architectural shapes and sharp tailoring, with a minimalist yet futuristic feel. I find this to be a very interesting choice for a brand whose aesthetic has been very camp so far. This could signal a shift in branding and identity for the entire brand, but I might be getting ahead of myself.

Mythology
I recently put Black Orchid Parfum to the test, wearing it for several days to observe its development. Initially, the truffle was the most prominent note, creating a bold and almost gourmand opening. As the day progressed, the black orchid and ylang-ylang grew more noticeable. I could also detect plum at the opening, although that isn’t a listed note, so I’m not entirely sure.
The longevity of this fragrance is impressive; it lasted for almost 8 hours on my skin and much longer on my clothes. The scent dried down beautifully throughout the day, transitioning from a strong opening to a warm dry down featuring vanilla, patchouli, and hints of chocolate, which I enjoyed.
Feedback
I asked several people for their opinions on the new Black Orchid flanker to test out what others would think. The reactions were varied. Some found it captivating, praising its blend of floral and spicy notes. While others found it too overpowering, as they don’t like bold scents. They particularly complained about the strong truffle and patchouli. These individuals found Black Orchid Reserve too heavy for their taste.
The Verdict
While I appreciate the complexity of Tom Ford’s Black Orchid Reserve, it isn’t my favorite. The longevity and sillage are exceptional, and it’s a fragrance that will, for better or for worse, be noticed when you wear it.
However, the combination of these particular florals doesn’t perfectly align with my personal preference for sweeter, more decadent fragrances. I can’t see myself wearing this fragrance as it doesn’t align with my personal style or taste. Yet again, I don’t particularly enjoy the original Black Orchid either.
This scent is a miss for me, but that’s not because it’s a bad scent. It’s just a personal preference. I would recommend trying this perfume if you are interested, as it is not a safe blind buy. And if your taste is anything similar to mine, you’d be disappointed.
