Rihanna and Dior make history hand in hand with the announcement of Rihanna as the new face of the luxury brand’s signature fragrance, J’Adore. Dior announced the news on Women’s Wear Daily last week.
Rihanna opened the doors for inclusion in the world of cosmetics with her very own brand, Fenty, which became one of the first celebrity-owned brands (and one of the first brands in general) to include so many foundation shades, including nearly every skin tone under the sun. Rihanna makes history and opens up doors for inclusion yet again, but this time in the perfume world, by becoming the first black woman to be the face of J’Adore by Dior.

“Being the new face of J’Adore is both an honor and a mission, this scent that I have known and loved for so long means so much to women. I am especially looking forward to joining this adventure and contributing to it through my world, my story, my roots, as well as my creativity and my own femininity.”

J’Adore is an iconic Dior fragrance. It is a fruity floral fragrance perfect for a warm spring day. The fruity opening and sweet base complement each other so well, and the floral heart of this scent makes you feel like you’re having a picnic with sweet baked goods in an open field of flowers.
Not only that, but this is also a nostalgic fragrance for most of us. For years, J’Adore has been a beloved scent. I remember my mom wearing it when I was ten years old, and now that I am a woman grown, it has become one of my favorite perfumes. It always takes me back to those days when I watched my mother get ready, wanting to look just like her when I grew up.
J’Adore has been a perfume present in most of our lives in one way or another as women; if our mothers didn’t wear it, it was worn by one of the women in our family. If it wasn’t worn by anyone we knew, then we surely remember the iconic ads featuring the prior face of the scent, Charlize Theron.

Charlize Theron has always been considered one of the most beautiful women in the film industry and has been the face of J’Adore for the past twenty years. Dior’s decision to make Rihanna the new face of this perfume is a power move, considering the status Rihana holds not just in the world of cosmetics but also in the world of fashion and music.
Rihanna was discovered in her home country of Barbados when she was only sixteen years old and was signed by Jay-Z in 2005. It took her years to get where she is today, but she became a pioneer as a musician and businesswoman of color after much hard work and perseverance. Seeing a woman like Rihanna, who has so much wealth and influence, become the face of an established fragrance of an esteemed luxury brand gives young black girls worldwide the opportunity to reach for the stars, seeing themselves in Rihanna.
