At this point, I think we have established that perfumers have attempted to add many things to perfumes—things that we would otherwise never have thought belonged there. Salt and spices are added to enhance other scents, the same way they do in food. Cheese provides a gourmand factor. Milk adds a creamy, soft, and slightly sweet quality…etc
Yet, one of the stranger ones I’ve come across is fish. I’m not saying stranger notes aren’t found in fragrance, but those are usually there for the funk aspect. But fish is added to provide something different. It’s there to give the perfume a savoury aroma.
The smell of fish, as we all know, isn’t the most pleasant. But with the right aromatics and flavours, it could smell phenomenal. This applies to fragrances with a fish note as well.
