Have you seen the latest perfume marinating trend on TikTok? The viral trend involves saturating your clothes with perfume and letting them sit overnight to supposedly create a long-lasting scent.
As someone always on the lookout for new ways to make my perfume last longer, I had to try it. Here’s my honest review of the perfume marinating trend: the process, the results, and why I think it’s a total waste of time and perfume.
What is Perfume Marinating?

The “perfume marinating” trend involves heavily spraying a garment with perfume, sealing it in a plastic bag, and letting it sit for several hours, or even overnight. The idea is that the fabric will absorb the perfume, resulting in a stronger, longer-lasting scent. Videos showcasing this trend often boast about smelling amazing all day long without reapplication.
My Perfume Marinating Experiment

Driven by curiosity, I decided to put this trend to the test. I selected one of my favourite tops, chose a perfume I love, and proceeded to generously spray the fabric. Following TikTok instructions, I placed the saturated garment in a sealed plastic bag and left it to “marinate” overnight.
The Results

The next day, I opened the bag, expecting a delightful scent. Instead, I was met with an intensely overwhelming scent. While the initial fragrance was potent, it lacked the subtle complexity I usually experience when wearing the perfume. The scent felt stale and artificial.
Why Perfume Marinating Is a Waste
Here’s why I believe the perfume marinating trend is ultimately ineffective and a waste of your precious perfume. To begin, this method requires a substantial amount of perfume compared to traditional application. Given the cost of many perfumes, this can quickly become an expensive habit.
Apart from that, you’re at risk of potential fabric damage. The alcohol, oils, and dyes in perfumes can potentially stain, discolour, or damage delicate fabrics. Repeated marinating could weaken fibres over time. Besides, there’s no scientific basis to support the claim that perfume marinating enhances the scent or significantly prolongs its longevity in a positive way.
The Flawed Logic Behind the Trend:

The fundamental flaw with the perfume marinating trend lies in a misunderstanding of fragrance evaporation. Regardless of how heavily a garment is saturated or whether it’s sealed in a bag, perfume molecules will inevitably evaporate over time.
While the plastic bag might temporarily contain the scent, once the garment is exposed to open air during wear, the perfume molecules will dissipate, negating any potential benefit of the marinating process. The method simply doesn’t circumvent the natural process of fragrance evaporation.
There are numerous methods to make your perfume last longer that are less costly and more effective, including maceration.
Skip the Perfume Marinating Trend

In my experience, the perfume marinating trend is a wasteful and ultimately disappointing method for achieving long-lasting fragrance. It’s expensive, potentially damaging to your clothes, and doesn’t deliver the nuanced scent you get from traditional application. Stick to tried-and-true methods for making your perfume last longer, and avoid wastefulness.
