Ginger has been around for thousands of years. The word ginger comes from the ancient Sanskrit shringavera, meaning ‘shaped like a horn’. The use of ginger can be traced back 5,000 years to ancient India and China, where it was used as a foundational medicinal root in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese practices.
The First Ginger Perfume

Origins Ginger Essence, launched in 2000, is frequently cited as one of the first mainstream fragrances to spotlight ginger as a primary top-note ingredient, blending it with lemon, lime, and bergamot. While ginger has been used for centuries in perfumes, it was historically hidden within complex spice blends.
What Ginger Smells Like

Ginger smells bright, zesty, and sparkling at first, quickly transitioning into a warm, woody, and slightly peppery scent. Often described as energising or fizzy, it provides a sharp contrast to softer notes, making it popular in both fresh citrusy blends and cosy, sweet gourmand perfumes.
Here are some of the most popular ginger fragrances that I recommend you try.
1. Hermès Twilly D’Hermès Eau Ginger EDP

|---|---|
| Brand | Hermès |
| Best for | Women |
| Fragrance Family | Floral Woody Musk |
| Notes | Top: Peony Middle: Candied Ginger and Ginger Base: Cedar |
| Release year | 2021 |
| Perfumer | Christine Nagel |
Twilly d’Hermès Eau Ginger is a flanker of the original Twilly d’Hermès; its name translates to ginger water. Eau Ginger features not one, but two ginger notes (candied ginger and fresh ginger) at the heart of the fragrance. I love this flanker for hot summer days, as it is reminiscent of a sweet, fizzy ginger soda. The peony adds a little softness but is so well blended that it doesn’t stand out, allowing the ginger to remain the star.
2. Elizabeth Arden White Tea Ginger Lily EDT

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Elizabeth Arden |
| Best for | Women |
| Fragrance Family | Floral Woody Musk |
| Notes | Top: Bitter Orange, Bergamot, Neroli, and Mandarin Orange Middle: Ginger, White Ginger Lily, and Violet Base: Musk, Mate, Cedar, and Tonka Bean |
| Release year | 2021 |
| Perfumer | In-house Perfumer |
White Tea Ginger Lily by Elizabeth Arden is a crisp, clean ginger scent. This fragrance is a bright daytime floral, perfect for the office. It is a discreet scent; if you smell it closely, you will be surprised by its edge. I attribute this edge to the ginger note. As it dries down, it turns more soapy and creamy, giving a comforting effect.
3. YSL L’Homme EDT

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Yves Saint Laurent |
| Best for | Woody Floral Musk |
| Fragrance Family | Woody Spicy |
| Notes | Top: Ginger, Bergamot, and Lemon Middle: Spices, Violet Leaf, White Pepper, and Basil Base: Tonka Bean, Cedar, and Tahitian Vetiver |
| Release year | 2006 |
| Perfumer | Anne Flipo, Pierre Wargnye, Dominique Ropion, and Juliette Karagueuzoglou |
YSL L’Homme reflects the versatile nature of the ginger note. The note is featured in the opening as a spicy yet incredibly smooth aroma. This freshness is paired with citrus and ozonic notes, making it perfect for casual wear. Perhaps this could be the men’s version of the ‘clean girl’ perfume. Regardless, this makes a perfect signature scent.
4. Azzaro The Most Wanted Parfum

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Azzaro |
| Best for | Men |
| Fragrance Family | Woody Spicy |
| Notes | Top: Ginger Middle: Woodsy Notes Base: Bourbon Vanilla |
| Release year | – |
| Perfumer | Michel Girard, Nadège Le Garlantezec, Shyamala Maisondieu, and Roxanne Kirkpatrick |
While the rest of the fragrances mentioned in this list so far are either summer-appropriate or versatile scents, The Most Wanted Parfum by Azzaro is better suited for fall and winter. It is a simple composition of woody notes, ginger, and vanilla, with the vanilla being the most prominent. It is a lovely, warm fragrance with a hint of zest from the ginger note.
5. Xerjoff Uden Overdose EDP

| Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Brand | Xerjoff |
| Best for | Unisex |
| Fragrance Family | Woody Spicy |
| Notes | Top: Lemon and Bergamot Middle: Ginger and Tobacco Blossom Base: Amber and Musk |
| Release year | 2018 |
| Perfumer | Chris Maurice |
The final fragrance on this list is Uden Overdose by Xerjoff. I would say this is a versatile scent that you can wear all year round, but I personally wouldn’t wear it in extreme cold (which we don’t get here in Dubai anyway). This fragrance smells fresh and airy. The tobacco blossom in the dry down smells addictive and blends beautifully with the ginger. I think that is the note that makes it stand out and makes it more well-liked than the original Uden.
