Today, our spotlight falls on Annick Ménardo, a highly intuitive French perfumer known for her persistent approach and distinctively bold signature. Often celebrated for her masterful musicality in blending accords and her rebellious flair, Ménardo has crafted some of the most iconic and daring fragrances of the modern era.
Let us take a look at her journey from the sunny French Riviera to becoming a formidable, award-winning force in the perfume industry.
From Cannes to the Laboratory

Born just a wing beat away from the perfume capital of Grasse in Cannes, France, Ménardo’s early academic pursuits were rooted in biochemistry and medicine. However, her fascination with scents ultimately led her to pivot to perfumery. She enrolled at the prestigious ISIPCA academy in Versailles, where she was taught by the renowned Isabelle Doyen.
Following her graduation, she joined Créations Aromatiques (now Symrise) and sharpened her craft under the mentorship of master perfumer Michel Almairac, absorbing his distinct style. In 1991, Ménardo joined Firmenich, where she spent decades creating best-sellers. In 2018, her journey came full circle when she returned to Symrise.
Style et philosophie
Ménardo’s artistic approach is based on intuition and emotion. She has occasionally been dubbed dark by industry insiders due to her fondness for burnt, tarry, and smoky scents, but she is equally masterful with vivid colours, often viewing her creations in shades of green, mauve, or fiery red. Her favourite ingredients, anise and heliotrope, often make an appearance in her formulas.
She views perfumery the way a composer views music: “I compose my perfumes as if I were writing music. I know a creation is finished when I am surprised, when the ingredients speak amongst themselves, and I can hear the melody.”
An artist who composes for those willing to listen, she famously channelled her fiery passion into the olfactory art installation /7S/ by Nobi Shioya, creating a scent for the sculpture Anger. In 2019, she collaborated with Buly and the Musée du Louvre to craft a perfume inspired by the sculpture La Nymphe au Scorpion, and in 2023, she won the People’s Choice Award at Duftstars for her work on Boss Bottled Parfum.
Créations remarquables
Annick Ménardo is responsible for an incredible array of beloved scents. Here are a few of her standout creations:
Hugo Boss Bottled Absolu

A bold, highly concentrated addition to the iconic Boss Bottled family, a legendary lineage Ménardo herself helped establish. This intense fragrance offers a rich, roasted woody-ambery signature, masterfully blending warm, notes épicées avec profondeur les bois. It is a powerful, sophisticated scent.
Davidoff Cool Water Intense

A completely new, captivating take on a classic parfum aquatique. Ménardo created a highly refreshing yet warm fragrance. She achieved this by blending ethically sourced green mandarin with an unexpected heart of noix de coco water, all melting gracefully into an ambre base.
Calvin klein femme

A fragrance celebrating the powerful nature of femininity. For this creation, Ménardo helped create a delicate yet striking woody-floral scent. It opens with the luminous freshness of eucalyptus acorns, transitions seamlessly into a heart of fleur d'oranger, and settles on a sturdy base of Alaskan cedarwood.
